Anybody out there?

Once upon a time, when I was still a little girl, I adopted a tiny, sickly, ugly, mud-colored puppy who grew into something fiery, exceptionally intelligent, and not at all like most other dogs of my acquaintance, and she ruled my heart for over 15 years. Her past will never be fully known, but her appearance and her mannerisms (oh dear heaven, her mannerisms) were strikingly similar enough to RRs to make me vow to have one when the time was right.

At some point within the next year, when I finish my master's degree, the time will be right.

I am not opposed to rescue. Most of my current pets are rescues. However, I live with six cats ranging in age from 7 months to 15+ years, and their safety is my top priority. I also have a young shepherd mix who can be very discriminating in his reactions to other dogs. I believe integrating a puppy into the menagerie would be the best and safest option. You can meet the menagerie, past and present, here.

I am working on researching RRCUS breeders as time allows, but I would be very interested to know where you got your dogs and/or who you would (or would not!) recommend. I'd be interested in anyone within a day's drive of Memphis, TN because I'd like to meet the breeder and intend to personally pick up the new family member.

Comments should be screened so, please, be candid.

Poor pup!

My dog came home from the park today scratching his face, and an hour later his eye had swollen up enormously !! The clinic said it looked like an allergic reaction. They were so busy and we waited so long they finally told me I should go somewhere else. But by then his eye had gone down some, his temp was normal, and he was cranky and hungry so we came home.

He will be 6 months old on the 19th.. and he weighs 65 pounds! What a fatty!

Here is his poor eye. What a battered pup :(

Hi I'm Bridget and this is my two year old ridgeback, Ghillie Scout. Ghillie loves playing in the woods and going for long walks on the beach (he is a romantic). Even though he likes the beach he is a bit scared of the water. These are pictures of us at the beach with my boyfriend and on the cross country trails at a local university. All three of us will be moving to San Diego in the next couple of months from Florida, so if anyone is from out there and knows of any good dog parks or vets they would recommend please let me know.

Hello all, I've just joined... here's a little about me and my dog!

I got Rider (Kengali's Travelin' Man) from Kengali Ridgebacks in Eustis, Fl, at the end of January. He is a little over 4 1/2 months old now.. makes 5 months on the 19th! We live down in Miami but I am graduating college in May and we are moving-- possibly to Boulder, Co, if I can find a job/house!! I love to travel and Rider has already been my companion on several road trips. He is a very good traveler, although he is going to outgrow my Civic way too fast.

Rider is a big goof... I have 2 cats and he terrorizes them... playfully of course. Ditto the bunny and the gliders. He is really good, though. Snoozing on the bed next to me as I type. His parents are champion show dogs and he is just gorgeous. Everyone who meets him loves him!

Rider is my first dog of my very own (grew up with family dogs) and my first ridgeback. I do get asked all the time if he is a boxer, second only to the comment "Look how BIG his paws are!!" It seems that everyone who knows ridgebacks loves them, which is a good sign for me, as a new owner! One RR owner at the park the other day said "Once you have a ridgeback you never want another kind of dog." He is learning to love swimming in the pond at the park... but he is a terrible swimmer, so it's pretty hilarious.

Anyway, here's some of the tons of pics I take!

Bein' handsome

Ok, I finally got around to adding Ridgeback Rescue as our webpage, with a bit of a disclaimer in our info to say that it is not, in fact, run by us, but that we support it anyways. ;) Thanks to everyone who joined, it is very nice to know just how many other people there are out there that love this wonderful breed.

I don't expect that we'll have people posting all that often - it is a new and small community yet, but I hope nobody feels shy in asking questions or for advice. Welcome, and to those of you who posted pics of your pups, a universal "awww"!

Thanks for the invite! I've really enjoyed seeing all the cute ridgeback photos.

My name is Jenny and I have a seven year old rr mix named Scrumper. I got her from the humane society in Statesboro, GA when she was only 6 weeks old. She was born in the pound and her mother was a ridgeback. It's anybody's guess what kind of dog her father was.

Anyways, here are some pics from my fotki page:

The blonde pointy one is Mary, our greyhound mix. We adopted her two years ago as company for Scrumper. The vet thinks she's about 7 or 8. They are both the sweetest dogs I have ever known and, in case you couldn't tell from the pictures, extremely good sports about playing dress up.

I have a 2 year old ridgeback whose name is Honey. Both parents are Australian national champions in dog shows and breeder we bought Honey from has a long history of breeding beautifully laid back personalities into her ridgebacks.

Honey is a pet quality ridgeback, her crowns are not even and there is a slight notch in her tale, but she has all the wonderful qualities of the perfect pet. She is particularly cuddly despite her size and has many amusing personality traits. Her favourite toy is a pair of army socks tied together that we call "socky", every week I swear its becomes more ragged and slobbery because she plays with it all the time and we usually end up with scratches down our arms when she uses her huge paws to try to catch socky when we play with her.

Is it usual for a ridgeback to have really sensitive ears? Ever since Honey was a puppy she would whimper if you even slightly pulled on her ears, she hates that but she loves it when you rub her ears.

Here are some photos of my gorgeous Honey

It's great to have a community to talk about our gorgeous, and far-too-intelligent dogs. Our Ridgeback is named Tsavo. She's about 3 years old. We got her from the RR Rescue, and she was found with her brother as a stray in Nebraska. She came to us with some bad habits, but she's grown into a wonderful and amazing member of the family. This is not the best picture of her, but hereCollapse ) she is.

While I'm posting, does anyone have good advice on the jumping behavior? We can't seem to find a way to break her of jumping on the guests in the house. Doggie daycare and training haven't worked. We are hoping she will just grow out of it. Any thoughts?
